The Arab press has been treating Israeli attempts to implement passive defenses along the areas bordering the Palestinian Authority, such as electronic fences and buffer zones, as another Israeli aggression against the Arabs. Incredibly, the April 24th al-Ahram newspaper, Egypt?s main daily, considers the implementation of such passive defenses as worse than the IDF incursions of the past month, even as it bombastically calls such incursions ?the most revolting massacres known to mankind?? The newspaper states Israel has ?gone a step further? (than the ?most revolting massacres known to mankind?) by setting up buffer zones along the PA areas. Such a buffering attempt is ?destroying all hope of peace with the Arabs. It has killed the Oslo accords?? The Egyptian newspaper further states that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon ?is likely to pursue his policies of aggression,? such as the buffer zones, ?as long as he enjoys the protection of the US, the world's only super power??

Similarly, another Egyptian newspaper, Al-Wafd, proclaimed, ?Here is another Berlin Wall being established, not in Germany but in Palestine.? Calling the passive defenses a ?public inauguration of the apartheid regime that is to be established in Palestine??, Knesset member Azmi Bishara, writing in the Lebanese as-Safir, openly advocated the adoption of a strategy by the PLO that ?makes the occupation costly for the occupier, while allowing the population under occupation to sustain that resistance in the long term.?
