One of the oft-repeated demands made on Israel by the Arab states, and by others, is to remove the ?settlements?. While Westerners and liberal Israelis tend to identify ?settlements? with those Jewish towns and cities established on parts of the Land captured in the 1967 Six Day War, the Arab press often makes it clear that such a definition is only partially true. That is to say, the Arab world certainly sees the Jews of Judea, Samaria and Gaza as ?illegal settlers,? but that is not to say that the Jews in Haifa or Tel Aviv or Netanya are not ?illegal settlers.?

As part of a general report on the international condemnations of Israel, following the IDF anti-terrorism offensive, the Syrian news agency described a recent terrorist attack in Haifa. The report erroneously located the attack in Jaffa, but it did not fail to give the Jews of the city, located in pre-1967 Israel, an appellation in line with the general Arab view of Jews living in cities anywhere in Israel. SANA reports, ?Earlier in the day, tens of Palestinians were killed and wounded by Israeli occupation forces, hundreds arrested and 14 Israeli settlers, at least, killed and more than 25 others wounded in a suicidal attack in Jaffa.? [Emphasis mine ? NRK]

The Syrian news release began by stating that ?The ongoing Israeli blitz and aggressions were strongly condemned regionally and internationally?? After reporting on the various statements made by dignitaries from the Arab world and outside of it regarding Israeli policies in Judea, Samaria and Gaza, SANA adds that Farouk Al-Qaddoumi, Chairman of the Palestinian Liberation Organization Politburo, ?asserted that Sharon is a war criminal, Israel a racial system, and the US didn't put any pressure on Israel to implement the signed agreements with Palestinians.?
