Wondering why the US is making such conciliatory statements towards the Palestinian Authority? Curious as to how is it that the US tabled a UN Security Council Resolution calling for a Palestinian state, with no condition of the PA ending terrorist activities? Intrigued as to the source of the US Administration?s latest calls on Israel to stop defending itself? According to the Egyptian press, almost entirely government-affiliated and all controlled, there is one reason: the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

According to the Egyptian press reports, Mubarak single-handedly managed to precipitate an about-face in the US administration?s view of Israel. On the US-sponsored UNSC resolution no. 1397, calling for the establishment of a Palestinian state, the Egyptian newspaper al-Akhbar comments, ?The resolution also marks a new a spirit prompted by the successful visit to Washington recently of President Mubarak.? Likewise, Egypt?s October Magazine deduces from the UNSC resolution, ?It is obvious that a change has taken place in America's position regarding peace in the Middle East and that this change has been the product of President Mubarak's recent visit to Washington.?

Relying more on understatement, although not much so, the Ros al-Youssef magazine extends Mubarak?s reach. ?It is clear that US policies regarding the Middle East have undergone a substantial change,? the Egyptian magazine notes, ?a change which has become obvious not long after President Mubarak's visit to Washington early this month.? For Ros al-Youssef it is significant, indeed, that a ?day or two after the visit, President George W. Bush expressed America's concern over the exchange of violence in the Middle. For the first time ever, too, Secretary of State Colin Powell has been heard to harshly criticize Sharon's policies.? However, that is not all, we are informed by the magazine, Mubarak managed to effect societal change which has ?extended further to reach the heart of Israel, where an anti-Sharon campaign has been launched and where Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, speaking to the press in Jerusalem has brought his prime minister under heavy fire?? Despite that apparent systemic success in the war of nerves with Israel, the editorial comment states, ?The most significant manifestation of the success of President Mubarak's Washington visit, however, could be seen in UN Security Resolution 1397??
