It may be instructive for the Israeli judiciary to observe how the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan treats terrorist activity on its own soil.

The Jordan Times reports on the death sentence handed down by a Jordanian State Security Court for ?plotting terrorist attacks against US and Israeli targets in Jordan..? The sentence is part of a legally mandated retrial of a man sentenced to death, along with six others, for being part of the al-Qaeda terrorist network. The convicted man, an American citizen named Raed Hijazi, did not actually commit any terrorist acts and was acquitted of ?belonging to an illegal organization, al-Qaeda.? On the other hand, he was convicted of conspiracy, possession and manufacture of illegal weapons. Two other defendants were sentenced, again in absentia, ?to 15 years with hard labour on convictions of plotting to carry out terrorist attacks,? reports the newspaper.

Another interesting detail of the case reported in the Jordan Times is that ?Hijazi was arrested in Syria and later extradited to Jordan on Oct. 29, 2000.? He was already convicted and sentenced to death in absentia five months ago, reports the newspaper, but ?Jordanian law grants persons sentenced in absentia a retrial when they return to the country.?
