The Egyptian Gazette published an interesting article that purports to be a review of the Israeli press. The article reaches the conclusion, ?[T]he press should base its reputation on its credibility and objectivity? the Israeli press has neither.?

The spark for this statement is the media report that US special envoy Anthony Zinni referred to PLO leader Yasser Arafat as a ?mafia godfather? and the subsequent denials issued by the US State Department. According to the article, ?the blunder by Maariv is nothing new. Along with Ha'arets and Jerusalem Post, Maariv has consistently tried to throw a spanner into the works of the peace process. These newspapers seek to add fuel to the fire and incite further hatred.?

The Egyptian newspaper categorically states, ?Anywhere else in the world, the press would soon lose credibility if it allowed itself to become like putty in the hands of outsiders and violated the press code of ethics.? Purporting to identify the source of the Israeli press? alleged bias, the Gazette article concludes that ?Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is manipulating some newspapers to serve as vehicles for his deviant mentality and disastrous policies.? Not only Ariel Sharon, however, for ?enemies to Middle East peace, either within Israel or without, will use particular newspapers to distort values and principles?.?
