600 Jewish students, 400 from Latin America and 200 from France, attended a special aliyah (immigration) and education fair in Jerusalem this past week. The fair, organized by the Jewish Agency, presents the potential olim (immigrants) with information on higher education in Israel, programs for tourists, olim rights, employment for academics, etc. In addition, the students will have the chance to meet other students who have successfully made aliyah at a booth being called ?Cafe Oleh?. The students will not only be learning, they are also asked to teach. They will be helping to prepare educational programs for youngsters in their respective communities back home.
The French and South American groups are in Israel as part of the ?Birthright? program for the strengthening of Jewish identity among youths from around the world. The ?Birthright? program is scheduled to bring 6,000 Jewish students to Israel over the next few weeks. Most of the young people taking part in the program are from South America and the republics of the Former Soviet Union. As part of the program, the students meet with Israelis and participate in workshops such as the aliyah fair in Jerusalem, all designed to strengthen their Jewish and Zionist identity.
