Jerusalem will be joining Oxford, Munich, Paris and Italy as part of a consortium of five biotechnology centers in the world, called the Fifth Framework Program, reports the Jerusalem Post. The $2.5 million consortium was established in order to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and expertise among biotech incubators, with the networked incubators and start-ups benefiting from expertise found anywhere throughout the network.

Developer of the idea for a cooperative of incubators were the Jerusalem Development Authority and the Jerusalem Institute for Israel Studies, whose head, Dan Kaufman, will be heading up the project in Israel. The European Union has allotted $500,000 for the establishment of the network here and the entire consortium funding is to last for 30 months, beginning later next year. The cooperative projects are expected to include 3-5 Israeli biotech companies during their operations, but the hope is to expand the concept to other technology incubators here and abroad. The Oxford incubator, Kaufman told the Post, was coordinating the project.
