Marking the UN General Assembly vote to establish a Jewish State in the Land of Israel, which occurred on November 29, 1947, the Jewish Agency held a unique and original ceremony at immigrant absorption centers in Upper Nazareth, Tiberius and Carmiel, in the north of the country. At the ceremonies, attended by city officials, 270 immigrants from the republics of the former Soviet Union were presented with new birth certificates that show the date of birth according to the Jewish calendar. Furthermore, according to the Jewish Agency?s Global Agenda newsletter, ?next month during Chanukah, a ceremony awarding Israeli ID cards to 1,000 Selah (Students Before Parents) students will take place at Jerusalem?s International Convention Center.?
