In an unprecedented achievement, the Israeli team competing in the Baltic Way multinational mathematics competition, held this year in Germany, has won the first place trophy with a perfect score of 100. In comparison, the second place winner, the Estonian team, finished the competition with a score of 82. Earning all possible points, an achievement never matched in the competition?s twelve years, the Israeli students were also given special recognition for the inventiveness they displayed in developing a particularly outstanding solution to one of the problems presented to the competitors. The Israeli team consisted of students Alexei Antin, Yoni Yedidya, Aviv Shein and Doron Shafrir and was coached by Professor Shai Giron of Haifa University. The Baltic Way trophy will remain in Israel until next year?s competition.
The Baltic Way competition, with participating teams coming from those states bordering the Baltic Sea or from those considered Scandinavian, is held annually in one of the participating states. Israel was invited to the competition by the host country, Germany, under a Baltic Way regulation adopted just last year, which allows the host country to invite one non-member state to the competition.
