In a very enlightening editorial, entitled ?Sharon, Unrepentant and Unreformable?, in the Lebanese periodical al-Hawadeth, the editor cites the Prime Minister?s statement to London?s Guardian that he was planning to ?welcome one million additional Jews? as evidence that Sharon is ?unrepentant.? The expressed desire for mass aliyah to Israel, according to al-Hawadeth, ?showed that Sharon has learned nothing from the events of the last decade, has not understood the dynamic that drove the peace process from the Madrid Conference of October 1991 to the outbreak of the Intifada last September, has not understood that the Palestinians? aspiration for self-determination in their own land cannot be quenched by force or fraud.?
Implying that the call for Jewish immigration into Israel is as a type of ?violence,? the editorial continues, ?We need not enumerate the many terrorist operations signed ?Ariel Sharon?. They all have one thing in common: to intimidate the Palestinians, the indigenous inhabitants of the land, and turn them into unprotesting helots.?
?Of course,? al-Hawadeth states, ?Palestinians will never accept anything short of full self-determination, and that is why the Intifada will go on until the Israelis pull out of every inch of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip and the Palestinian refugees are able to return to their homeland. And as long as the Intifada continues, Israelis living in the occupied lands will be targets for attack.? Many Israelis, ?surely fleeing the violence plaguing the country as a result of the Intifada,? according to the editorial, ?left the ?promised land?.? Citing the possible demographic effect of such a continuing flight of Jews, the periodical considers it ?small wonder then that the Prime Minister is thinking of ?welcoming? a million more Jewish migrants.?
Referring to the ?so-called ?Israeli Arabs?,? al-Hawadeth states that Israel practices ?repression even on those who have Israeli nationality.? However, in the same paragraph, the article states that the ?number of them eligible to vote is about 400,000, which means that they are theoretically entitled to 12 members of Parliament, but? unfortunately, because of rivalries of various kinds, these MPs do not comprise a single bloc and are therefore unable to make the Arab voice heard with the necessary force.?
