As part of the Jewish Agency?s Partnership 2000 Project, cities in Israel are twinned with Jewish communities in cities and countries abroad. The linkages created through the Project include ties between schools, assistance with immigrant absorption, joint promotion of leadership programs and other projects designed to increase Israel-Diaspora connectedness. The five new partnerships are between Ashkelon and the Mexico, Netanya and Cincinnati, Nahariya and Belgium, Shoham and Venezuela, and Ramleh and Kansas City. This brings to more than 80 the number of participating Israeli communities, twinned with over 500 Jewish communities around the world. The Project has been the catalyst for 650 joint projects between world Jewish communities and local municipalities.
The announcement of the new partnerships was made at the convention of the Jewish Agency Board of Governors, which took place at Jerusalem?s Hyatt Hotel. Alex Grass, Chairman of the Jewish Agency Board of Governors, JAFI Chairman Sallai Meridor and leaders of partner municipalities attended the ceremony marking the start of the partnerships.
