The Volunteers for Israel, or Sar-El, program brings people from around the world to Israel in order to volunteer on non-combat bases of the Israel Defense Forces. The volunteers perform various necessary tasks on the army bases, where they receive military uniforms and live alongside conscripted Israeli soldiers. So far this year the Sar-El program has seen 900 volunteers come to the country, compared with an average of 800 in previous years.

Last week, 167 people arrived to participate in Volunteers for Israel under the aegis of the Jewish Agency. Most of those recent arrivals are parents of youngsters who came to Israel on Jewish Agency programs, such as Na?aleh for high school students or the Selah academic preparatory program, or who are serving in the armed forces. The bulk of the participants are from the Former Soviet Union.
