Nahariya, now considered a ?border settlement? due to its proximity to areas under Palestinian Authority jurisdiction, was selected for twinning with Belgium?s Jewish community in the context of the Jewish Agency?s Partnership 2000 program. Sallai Meridor, Chairman of the Jewish Agency, instructed the directors of the program to give priority to twinnings with ?border settlements.? According to the Global Jewish Agenda, a publication of the Jewish Agency, representatives of the Belgian Jewish community and Nahariya will collaborate in the promotion of educational and social welfare projects.
Nahariya thus joins several new twinned cities under the auspices of Partnership 2000, including Hadera and the communities of Harish-Katzir and a group of Jewish communities in the southeastern United States, Netanya and the Cincinnati Jewish community and Ramleh, along with the Gezer regional council, with the Jewish community of Kansas City. Partnership 2000 is designed to increase ties between Diaspora Jewish communities with those in Israel, specifically in the Galilee and Negev regions. The Negev and Galilee were targeted in order to assist in their development in the coming years. As of now, 600 Jewish communities around the world are twinned with 30 different areas in Israel.
