Bahraini newspapers, the Gulf News and Akhbar al-Khaleej, reported on the curious sighting of Israelis at the recent emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic States Conference in Doha last week, which was called in reaction to the commencement of the American and British offensive against the Taliban of Afghanistan. Akhbar al-Khaleej quoted ?informed sources? as saying that ?Many Israelis were spotted in the conference hall?? On recognizing the Israelis, some delegates apparently left the meeting in protest.
According to the Gulf News, ?Many in Bahrain are asking: ?How did the Israelis come there and what were they doing there? Moreover, how did they get visas to attend such an important gathering of Muslims??? The sources quoted by the Bahraini press questioned the very presence of Israelis in Qatar, after the Israeli trade mission was shut down before the OIC meeting in November of last year. Although the Qatari government claimed that the Israeli officials were not in the country since then, persistent rumors abound that, in fact the Israeli trade mission was still operating and that an announcement that it was not was merely a public relations ploy to save the OIC meeting at the time.
