When Timothy McVeigh was found guilty of terrorism he was sentenced to death by the US courts. At this very moment half of the American Navy is sailing around the world to hunt down Osama Bin-Laden.
Unfortunately, with us, nothing has changed. If anything it has gotten worse. Following the vicious murder of Sarit Amrani, mother of three young children, on September 20, the government decided to take absolutely no military action. Usually the Sharon government orders, at least, a limited military response.
The script is well known. Following a terror attack we target another military building. Slaughter it. Completely demolish it, in fact. We take our multi-million dollar Apache helicopters and shoot multiple air to ground missiles into it totally leveling it. That will teach those Arab terrorists!
Pictures of this vicious massacre are then broadcast all over the world. The newspapers scream ?Israeli Attack? and pictures of the mangled structures were shown around the globe. You know, its part of the ?circle of violence? which has engulfed the region. Arabs murder Jews and Jews murder buildings.
Don?t worry, there wasn?t anybody in the building. Heaven forbid. You don?t expect the Israeli army to actually hurt somebody, do you? In fact, when Israel first began targeting empty military installations it actually gave the Arabs warning well in advance so no terrorist would, heaven forbid, be hurt. Now, of course, they know full well that Israel targets such structures following a terrorist attack and are always far away when it happens.
After an Arab suicide bomber slaughtered 18 innocent young Israelis at Tel Aviv?s Dolphinarium, the whole world waited with baited breath for Israel?s justified retaliation. They were to be disappointed. The Sharon government refused to use lethal force, squandering its upper hand on political maneuverings that produced nothing.
Of course destroying empty buildings gives the impression of fighting back, which is what the Sharon government wants. Too scared to actually fight and yet unwilling to let go of the reigns of government it must put on a good show for that portion of the Israeli public that actually expects their government to defend them. While the Israeli public is half fooled by these tactics and the world media is gladly fooled, happily burying or omitting the fact that no one was killed in the retaliation, the Arabs are definitely not. They see only too well that they risk nothing by taking innocent Jewish lives. They can freely spill Jewish blood and virtually nothing will happen to them.
In the past year, Arab terrorists carried out 20 major terrorist attacks against Jewish civilians. After only three did Israel respond with significant lethal force. In none of those attacks did the Arab loss of life even remotely approach that of the Jewish.
Here is a short list of just some of the terrorist attacks in the past year and Israel?s ?massive response?:
October 12, 2000 ? Two Israelis butchered by Arab mob in Ramallah in a barbaric lynching, which is caught on tape.
Israeli response ? Police Station, Voice of Palestine Radio and Palestinian Security Force Headquarters in Ramallah attacked (not destroyed) after army gives warning well in advance. Result - there are absolutely no Arab fatalities. Major-General Giora Eiland explains, ?Maximum attention was paid to minimizing the number of casualties. We used anti-tank missiles, which cause relatively little environmental damage and are very accurate. We did not use combat planes or tanks. It is obvious that we can cause much more serious and extensive damage.?
June 1, 2001 ? Arab suicide bomber murders 20 Israelis in a Tel Aviv disco attack that shocks the world.
Israeli response ? Nothing. Sharon government uses attack to pressure Arafat to return to talks.
August 9, 2001 ? Arab suicide bomber murders 15 Israelis in a Jerusalem restaurant.
Israeli response ? No terrorists killed in response. No buildings even destroyed. Orient House seized. Originally the government promised the seizure would be permanent, then when the public?s anger had been appeased they backtracked and said it was only temporary.
September 9, 2001 ? Five Israelis murdered: three in Naharia by suicide bomber, two in Jordan Valley in drive-by shooting.
Israeli response ? IDF targets military installations in Ramallah and Jericho. No Arab fatalities.
Many supporters of Israel, assuming the government is going all out fighting terrorism, shrug their shoulders in exasperation. ?They?ve done all they can,? they say, ?It just isn?t working. What else can be done?? The answer is quite simple, fight back. Stop pretending to fight and start really fighting. It works.
The only time Israel did carry out significant retaliatory action, killing nine Arab terrorists in two separate attacks at the beginning of July, there was no Arab terrorism for two weeks, proving beyond a doubt that the best defense is offense.
Unfortunately that was the exception. All the rest of the time Israel goes merrily along taking punch after punch, providing little deterrent, and deceiving, it would seem, only itself.
