The Israel Ports & Railroad Authority has announced several development projects for the Israeli ports and railways for the year 2002.

According to the Authority, private sources will provide over $200 million for development of Israel?s ports during the year 2002. However, the Authority will be providing 25% of the cost of the projects. They will include construction projects at the Port of Haifa and the Ashdod "Jubilee Port" project, involving expansion of piers and the acquisition of new equipment. Ultimately, there will be completely new port facilities opened in Haifa and Ashdod in the coming years.

In another multi-million dollar upgrade project, the Authority will be investing almost $600 million in Israeli railroads during the course of 2002. Included in the budget is the Jerusalem - Tel Aviv railway project, which has been suspended for the last three years. Other projects to be taken up in 2002 include the construction of a third track on the nation's key route from the center to the north, a coastal line between Ashkelon and the north and an expansion project linking Beer Ya'akov with Rishon LeZion, to be the basis for a future south Tel Aviv - Ramle/Lod line. The existing Tel Aviv - Kfar Saba line is to be extended, as well.
