The University Games, held in China last week, were the scene of an Israeli history-making event. Israeli Pole-Vaulter Alex Averbukh became the first Israeli in history to win a gold medal at the Games. Averbukh won the gold in a vault higher than 5.80 meters. He was followed by Czech athlete Stefan Vanchek, who was not able to clear that height. Although the University Games medal is Averbukh?s first gold, he won the world championship in pole-vaulting in the year 2000.
