A series of not-for-profit theater performances have been held this week throughout the north of Israel. The unique feature of the performances is that the 20 or so actors are from the ?New Stage? Russian Jewish theater troupe. The young actors approached the Jewish Agency?s head emissary in Russia, Carroll Unger, and asked him to organize a tour of solidarity performances, in order to ?encourage the spirit of the residents of Israel.? The performances of satirical works about Russians who emigrated to America are intended for Russian-speaking audiences. The troupe has performed in Afula, Nazareth Illit, Haifa, Beit Shean, Kiryat Shmona and Karmiel.
The Jewish Agency is paying the costs of hosting the troupe in an absorption center in Nazareth Illit. The Moscovite actors will get a chance to meet with Israeli colleagues, perform jointly with the local Nazareth Illit theater members and will tour northern Israel, giving them a chance to examine possibilities for aliyah and absorption.
