The head of the US National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA), Daniel Goldin, stated that Israel would become one of the few nations taking part in the further construction and operation of the first international space station, currently in orbit.



In other NASA news, Colonel Ilan Ramon, who was selected to be the first Israeli astronaut, will be a member of the crew of the space shuttle set to take off in May 2002. The Israeli government will consider a proposal, developed by Goldin and Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, to declare 2002 the ?Year of Space? in honor of the historic flight.
