Jewish youth from the United Kingdom have volunteered in Jerusalem and in Ashdod, with veteran Israelis and with new immigrants, adults and children.
Thirty-three British youths from the AJ6 youth movement came to Israel on the ?Israel Experience? program sponsored by the Jewish Agency. While here the youths themselves decided to provide a day of fun and games for disadvantaged Jerusalem youths who were unable to attend summer camp. The children, between the ages of 2 and 9, came from the neighborhoods of Pisgat Ze?ev and Neve Ya?akov and were selected for the activity by Matan, a not-for-profit organization that helps needy families in Jerusalem. The British youths and the Matan organization agreed to repeat the project again next year.
Meanwhile, at the southern end of the country, seven graduates of the Federation of Zionist Youth - one of the biggest Jewish youth movements in the United Kingdom - volunteered in Ashdod helping new immigrants, mainly children, from Middle Eastern countries to learn English. The two-week program was based in the local community center and allowed the new Israelis to practice their English language skills while benefiting from the personal interest of the volunteers. The Jewish Agency reports that ?Ashdod residents went out of their way, to make the young Britons feel very welcome.?
