Five Israeli firms are among the top 100 world leaders in the defense industry, according to the prestigious American weekly Defense News. The companies are: Israel Aircraft Industries (21st place, with revenues of $2.18 billion), Rafael (44th place, with revenues of $675 million), Elbit Electronics (49th place, with revenues of $555 million), Ta?as (55th place, with revenues of $450 million), and Elisra Electronics (81st place, with revenues of $281 million). The firms had made it into the top 100 in the past, but their ranking rose significantly this year as a result of increased sales.



In related news, the police department of Zimbabwe will purchase scores of Israeli riot control vehicles of the same make that have been in use by the Israeli police for the past fifteen years. Senior officials of the Zimbabwean police force and Interior Ministry visited Israel to inspect the vehicles, produced by Beit Alfa Trailers Company of Kibbutz Beit Alfa. The Zimbabweans selected the Beit Alfa bid over competitors. The Zimbabwean security forces believe that the vehicles will be needed during the African state?s presidential elections in April 2002, which are expected to be less than peaceful.
