Rachel Schneider, 12 years old, from Metrowest, New Jersey, decided that she wanted to strengthen her personal bonds with girls her own age in Israel by sponsoring a girl?s soccer team. To do so, she donated the money she received in Bat-Mitzvah gifts and, with her parents assistance, established a team in the Ofakim-Merchavim region in the Negev. The region of Ofakim-Merchavim was twinned with Metrowest as a part of the Jewish Agency?s Partnership 2000 project.

During this past week, Rachel herself arrived to participate in the training camp, along with the 25 girls selected for the team. The team will hold weekly practice sessions throughout the year and will compete against other teams from around the country. Eventually, the team will also challenge the Metrowest girl?s team -- which Rachel plays for.
