Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is actively and aggressively pursuing positive relations with the strategic states in the European Union, in order to achieve Syria?s ?political and economic objectives, which aim to create solid bases and suitable ground for cooperation and partnership with the European Union.? Within two weeks, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad paid a visit to France and to Germany in an attempt to shore up support from those states which he views as historically sympathetic to Syrian interests. According to last week?s Tishreen, the primary Syrian daily newspaper, ?Syria has good historical relations with the German people and she looks forward to strengthen coordination and cooperation ties [sic] that exist between her and Germany.? In relation to France, the newspaper?s editor wrote that, ?the visit strengthened friendly ties historical [sic] relations and cooperation between Syria and France.?

In addition to bilateral interests, of course, the Syrian President?s visit to Germany is ?a practical opportunity to discuss the needed and hoped for German role in peace process in the Middle East.? Tishreen also reported that Assad used his audience with the French and German leaderships to insist on the ?active presence of the European Union at all conferences, meetings and international contacts relating to the peace question in the area.?

Tishreen explained that the meaning of that insistence is that the ?European Union countries succeed in promoting coordination status between themselves to follow a united foreign policy with regard to the Arab-Israeli conflict, and also a clear stand towards Israel?s rejection of international laws and the killing of the Palestinian people, in addition to its attempts to create further spots of tension which may lead to destructive wars in the area.?
