"A quick look at the development of events in the region and Israel's escalation of threats and aggressions against Syria and Lebanon shows Sharon's intransigent scheming to export his internal conflict outside Israel in a bid to escape forward." So stated an opinion piece this week, appearing in Syria's official Tishrin newspaper. Entitled "Israel's reckless policy," the article declares:
"Sharon does not have a political project, but a project of his own based on more aggression, expansion, destruction and settlement. Of course such a devastating project pleases all Israeli extremists seeking to undermine all forms of peace with the Arabs at any price."
"As a result of the failure of the Israeli occupation troops and Zionist settlers to terrorize and crush the heroic Palestinian resistance and Intifada, Sharon has started to search for an outlet or any security tactics to cover his successive failures. At the same time, Sharon is very keen to kill all peace proposals even those agreed upon with the American envoys. This time Sharon wants to trifle with Arab security. His reckless policy advocates expanding the range of aggression against the Arab homeland and the issuing of repeated threats and provocations, particularly against Syria and Lebanon."
"[Sharon] is no more than a war criminal and a terrorist who should be sent to an international court. The UN is urged to take the necessary steps for Sharon's arrest and send him to court for being a war criminal. Hopefully the international community will not stand silent or inactive in the face of Israel's aggression, hostility to peace and schemes to drag the region into war."
