Haifa student Shelly Reich is the winner of the "Fourth Annual Biology Olympics", a national competition for high school students; it was held recently at Ramat Gan's Bar-Ilan University. In the finals, seven twelfth graders (out of an initial 80 participants) vied for first prize, a one-year scholarship for a future year of study at Bar-Ilan U. Miss Reich was presented with her award by Bar-Ilan U. President Prof. Moshe Kaveh and Faculty of Life Sciences Dean Prof. Yosef Steinberger. Sponsored by the Ministry of Education, the competition this year placed special emphasis on the field of ecology. The finalists were given a short test and then responded to questions posed by a panel of judges consisting of Bar-Ilan U. ecologist Prof. Yair Achituv and four educators from around the country.

Miss Reich completed her project "Ecological Niches in the Ein Kedem Stream in the Carmel" together with second-place winner Sasha Pikarsky, of the WIZO School in Haifa. Third prize went to Olga Parzovsky, of the ORT School in Ma'alot, whose project explored underground life in the wooded areas near Ma'alot. In addition to the scholarship, Miss Reich will receive a score of 100 in two of the five units in the matriculation exam in biology (without being tested). Runners up will receive a score of 100 in one unit of the exam.
