The Egyptian Press was quick to come to the defense of the Assad Jr. regime in Syria after Israel's retaliatory attack for the Hizbullah shelling of an Israeli tank this past weekend. In each one of the editorials written on the topic, Egyptian journalists painted the action as unwarranted Israeli aggression, and not as a response to Hizbullah terrorism. "Now, Sharon did it. He carried out his threats and hit a Syrian military site in Lebanon. He did it again and again against the Palestinians!" boomed Ahmed Hassan in Al-Akhbar. "He loudly announces that he rejects all initiatives to negotiate with any Arab party whatsoever. If it were in his hands, he would tear all peace accords signed with the Arabs! Have the Arabs already forgotten the resolutions taken in their recent summit to confront the escalating stances of Israel? Sharon throws the gloves of defiance in your faces, what are you going to do, Arabs?"

Following Hassan's lead, journalist S. Ragab penned this reaction in Al-Gomhureya: "...As if the atrocities it practices against the innocent Palestinians were not enough, it turned to rudely attack the Syrians in Lebanon. Regretfully, the world balance of justice has been broken once again. The double standard system is flagrantly defying the weaker party." Writing in Al-Wafd, A. Tarabili seemed so confident of Israel's aggressive, and not self-defense-oriented strategy, that he asked: "Damascus Next?" Convinced that the Israeli strike on the Syrian radar station signals an upcoming offensive war initiated by Israel, Tarabili called for "an urgent formidable Arab coordination with the confronting states surrounding the reckless rude enemy, Israel."
