Concerned Jews in Israel and overseas have decided to establish an Israel Association for Eating Disorders and Weight Problems. The move follows a conference on eating disorders held recently at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The voluntary national group will include professionals as well as students working in areas related to this field. The eating disorders conference was sponsored by the University 's Faculty of Medicine, the Canadian Friends of the University, and Hadassah University Hospital. It featured leading specialists in the field, mainly from Canada and Israel. Statistics vary, but anorexia, a form of self-starvation, is thought to affect between 1 to 2% of all teenage girls worldwide. Bulimia (bingeing and purging), which tends to affect people from the late teens on, may affect as many as one in six students. Overall, it is believed that more than 50% of all teenagers experience some form of eating disorder through their maturing years. Prof. Elliot M. Berry, of the Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School served as chairman of the organizing committee for the conference.
