The Jewish National Fund allocates more than 30 million shekels to land policy and land use research projects. So says its World Chairman, Yechiel Leket. He made the announcement recently to more than 200 academics, decision makers and public figures at a seminar convened by JNF's Land Policy and Land Uses Research Institute. "We rely on these studies in our decision making," he said. Applauding the Institute's academic orientation, he pointed out that its studies also stimulate further research in conjunction with various university bodies.
Although Keren Kayemet L'Yisrael-JNF focuses on agricultural research and development investigations, it also funds research on other topics such as: the economic value of open spaces in Israel; the crystallization of Israel's land settlement policy since statehood and in the early years of the Israel Lands Administration - 1948-65; management and planning of tourism recreation in KKL-JNF forests; non-agricultural rural land uses; the current desirability of public land. Apart from research programs, presentations also included the Ne'eman Institute program for a paper on national environmental priorities, prepared by Professor Yoram Avnimelech, as well as a survey of public attitudes towards kibbutz and moshav compensation, conducted by Dr. Mina Zemach.
