A first-of-its-kind plant in Israel for the treatment of industrial sewage and its recycling for use in industry - is presently being established in Ramat Hovav, at a cost of $15 million. Until now, industrial waste in the area had been channeled into walled reservoirs and later evaporated; the solid sewage that remained after the evaporation process was then burned in a giant incinerator or buried under supervision. These disposal facilities were not environment-friendly, however and problems with them led to the latest project.
The chief goals of the new enterprise include a more economical use of water for industry and a gradual purification of the giant evaporation reservoirs in the region. Implementing the project is the ADA corporation, with the help of researchers from Ben Gurion University of the Negev.
