Israel-based Arabs are capitalizing on outgoing Prime Minister Ehud Barak's willingness to negotiate Jewish holy sites in the Old City of Jerusalem. The Mufti of Jerusalem, Sheikh Ikrema Sabri, has "reaffirmed the Islamic ownership of the Buraq wall, referred to by many Jews as the Wailing Wall." So reports the Islamic Association for Palestine this week. Sabri claimed that Muslims "throughout the ages agreed unanimously that the wall was solely and wholly a Muslim property and that Jews had no right to any part of the wall." The Sheikh also asserted that "Israeli occupation authorities, which seized the holy place from Jordan in 1967, had no right renovating the Islamic cite." Sabri's statements came in the form of a religious "fatwa" or religious edict, released this past Tuesday.
