A Border Guard police unit operating in the PLO-controlled village of Tubas last night killed senior Hamas terrorist Assam Sawafte. Sawafte was responsible for enlisting and dispatching several suicide bombers in the last few months. The forces surrounded Sawafte's uncle's home and called on him to surrender; he did not, and he was killed in the ensuing gun battle.
IDF troops continue to operate in the PA-controlled city of Jenin in search of Arab terror suspects. A total of 60 wanted Arabs have been taken into custody since Friday, and troops have also discovered several bomb-making laboratories. At least one ready-for-use explosives belt was found and dismantled. North of Hevron, Ali Muhammad Asfoura of Hamas was apprehended this morning after he was long wanted by Israeli security forces. Last night near Shechem, a terrorist engaged in planning a major attack was caught, and led his captors to the explosives belt he planned to detonate. Near Ramallah, Fatah-Tanzim officer Iman Abu-Areb was arrested last night. He was responsible for terror attacks on both sides of the Green Line.
Arabs fired two more mortar shells at Gush Katif communities last night. One of the shells slammed into an apartment building, causing damage but no injuries.
A bus in Yesha and homes in the Dagan neighborhood of Efrat were shot at last night. Over 20 bullets hit the bus between Ofrah and Shilo. No one was hurt in either incident.
