Today, the 11th of Cheshvan, marks the anniversary of the death of Matriarch Rachel - and close to 30,000 people arrived at Rachel's Tomb today and last night. Private vehicles are still not allowed at the site, and Egged buses, running on an "on demand" basis since late yesterday afternoon, filled the void. Rachel's Tomb was nearly included in Jerusalem municipal borders following the Six Day War in 1967, but in actuality was left several hundred meters south of the city line. The government recently decided to include the holy site within the city's security jurisdiction...

The municipal workers' strike entered its fifth day today, with no end in sight. Trash is no longer piling up all over Tel Aviv, however, as the workers agreed to a request by Tel Aviv Police Chief Yossi Sedbon to clear out the growing piles from crowded areas. As in Jerusalem, where garbage is also being collected on certain streets, the police feared that the trash-hills presented an intolerable security risk...
