The Knesset Law Committee took two important steps today in ensuring that Israeli citizens are not unfairly maligned. It approved a bill that requires the media to publicize the acquittal of anyone whose indictment had been previously publicized, or about whom it was publicized that a police investigation had been initiated. The acquittal must be publicized "appropriately blatantly," in accordance with both the person's wishes and the level of the publication of the indictment.
A second piece of legislation prepared by the Law Committee today restricts the publication of suspects' names before they have been indicted. The proposal is sponsored by MKs Rabbi Chaim Druckman (NRP), Rabbi Shmuel Halpert (UTJ), and Yuri Stern (Yisrael Beiteinu). Public figures may be named, however, unless a court forbids it. Both bills are now ready for their final readings in the Knesset.
