The much-touted meeting between Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and US President Bush will take place in the Oval Office of the White House at 8:30 PM Israel time (2:30 PM in Washington). The two will discuss the upcoming US strike on Baghdad and the American "request" that Israel not respond if fired upon, the Wazzani River crisis, and the Israel-P.A. stalemate.
Mr. Sharon met last night with US National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice, and will confer with Secretary of State Powell, Vice President Cheney, Defense Secretary Rumsfeld and congressional leaders before he returns home on Thursday.
HaTzofeh, a daily newspaper associated with the religious-Zionist movement, editorialized today that Israel must not close off its options:
“Past experience shows that Israel cannot rely on the US... The US military has no new wonder weapon that could defend Israeli citizens... If the Baghdad regime does not collapse within the first few days of a US-led attack, Israel must keep its options open vis-a-vis a military response to any Iraqi attack.”
