(Updated Tuesday 9AM) The Iraqi people have been strongly urged to vote “yes” on a referendum granting Saddam Hussein the authority to serve as their president for seven more years. As polls opened throughout Iraq this morning, government officials warned that those who vote “no” to Saddam would face severe repercussions. Hussein is running unopposed as he did in 1995 when he received 99.9 percent of the vote. The results of today’s referendum are expected to produce similar results.
