Another terrorist attack was attempted near the American Embassy in Tel Aviv on Friday night, but an alert Israeli guard thwarted it. The incident began when a Palestinian suicide terrorist tried to enter and blow up a crowded cafe, and aroused the suspicions of the guard, Mikhail Sarkisov. Sarkisov later told what happened:
"The metal detector began to beep, and when I asked him what it was, he said, 'It's mine.' I realized that he didn't speak Hebrew, and then I saw his hand in his pocket and a wire sticking out. I grabbed his hand, but he ran away. I called to the guards at the nearby US Embassy and yelled that there was a terrorist."
The guards helped pin down the terrorist until police came and disarmed him from the bomb, which was later safely detonated. The 10-kilogram explosive could have caused a "major tragedy," said Tel Aviv Police Chief Yossi Sedbon. A Swiss millionaire who promised to reward people who stop terrorists will give Sarkisov a $5,000 prize. He has previously given two other such prizes.
