(Updated Wednesday 11:15 AM) The Statistics released yesterday from the 2000-2001 National Jewish Population Survey show that there are fewer Jews living in the United States than their were ten-years ago. 5.2 million Jews now live in the US compared to 5.5 million a decade earlier. The study also reveals that the Jewish community in the US has aged. The median age for American Jews has risen from 37 to 41, while at the same time the proportion of children in the Jewish community dropped from 21 to 19 percent.
177,000 people were contacted at random to participate in the survey conducted by United Jewish Communities (UJC). The project was a $6 million undertaking. Only a section of the survey’s results were released yesterday while the rest will be revealed next month.
