The Jerusalem District Court sentenced one of the accomplices in the murder of Rehavam Ze'evi to life imprisonment today. The man, Mahmed Rimawi, did not shoot the fatal bullets, but was rather assigned with the job of waiting for the murderers in the hotel's parking lot. He held a rifle that he was to use in case anyone tried to interfere. Another accomplice who supplied food and lodging to the escaping murderers was also convicted, but his sentence will be handed down at a later date.
Yasser Arafat said that the murderers of Rehavam Ze'evi will be imprisoned "only for a certain amount of time." The PLO leader, often called the "father of modern-day terrorism," spoke with the Arabic-language British paper Al Hayat. He said that the murder mastermind Ahmed Sadat and arms-smuggling organizer Fuad Shubaki are not actually in prison, but "are under international supervision in Jericho." Arafat denied that he had blanketly condemned the murder of soldiers and "settlers," insisting that he negated these murders only during periods of ceasefire.
