(Updated Monday 10 AM) Likud party members will go to the polls today, to elect members to their Central Committee. The Central Committee, will be responsible for selecting the party’s Knesset lineup in preparation for Israel’s upcoming general elections on October 28, 2003. Both Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Former Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu are confident that they will claim the Likud’s top slot, and thus potentially become the country’s next prime minister.

The results of today’s vote may project which man will in fact head the party. If more Sharon backers are elected to the Central Committee he may have the upper hand. However, if Netanyahu’s supporters are voted into power, he may end up top fiddle. Polls will be opened from 10AM-10PM around the country to accommodate the more than 300,000 registered party members.
