Prime Minister Sharon convened his weekly Cabinet meeting this morning. Sharon told his ministers to keep quiet on Israel’s retaliation strategies should Iraq launch a missile attack on the Jewish State, as it did during the 1991 Gulf War. Israel television reports that the US has been pressuring Israel to maintain a low profile on the Iraqi issue, so as not to harm the US’ coalition building efforts leading up to a strike on Baghdad. The US wasn’t particularly pleased that Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer told fellow Labor party ministers last week that Iraq may be targeted as early as next month.

Prime Minister Sharon has received an invitation from US President Bush to visit the White House next week. The two leaders are expected to discuss the upcoming US war on Saddam Hussein. Analysts believe that Bush will press Sharon to try to keep things quiet on the Palestinian front during the days leading up to a confrontation with Iraq. President Bush will make his case for a regime change in Iraq when he addresses his citizens on national television tomorrow night.
