Left-wing extremists showed up at the Tel Aviv District Court today to show their support for terrorist leader Marwan Barghouti - but were outdone by his Jewish lawyer who compared him to none other than Moses.
While State attorneys were asking for the extension of Barghouti's custody until the end of the proceedings against him for his many murderous terrorist activities, at least one of the protestors - Gush Shalom's Uri Avneri - was yelling outside, "The intifada will win!" Buoyed by the moral support of European lawyers present in the courtroom to show solidarity with Barghouti, one of his attorneys, Shammai Leibovitz - grandson of the late Prof. Yeshayahu Leibovitz - put on a particularly memorable performance. Leibovitz distributed copies of the passage in Exodus describing Moses slaying the Egyptian, and said that not only did Moses kill someone as part of the Jewish struggle for independence, he also ran away because he did not recognize the Egyptians' right to try him [just as Barghouti claims about Israel]. "When the judge pointed out," Arutz-7's Effie Meir reports, "that Moses killed someone who had just killed someone else, while Barghouti is charged with killing innocent people, Leibovitz had no answer. After a while, the judge lost patience with Leibovitz's 'Torah' lecture." Family members of terrorist victims were also furious with Leibovitz.
It was decided today that Barghouti will remain in custody at least until Nov. 21, when the proceedings on his remand will continue. He is charged with 37 counts of murder, aiding and abetting murder, enlisting others to murder, as well as involvement in the double lynching in Ramallah almost two years ago, an attack in Tel Aviv six months ago in which three people were killed, and generally leading the campaign of terrorism against Israel.
