A new medal will be inaugurated this Sunday in memory of Rehavam Ze'evi, on the first anniversary of his assassination by Palestinian terrorists. Ze'evi was an IDF General who headed the Central Command, and later served as a minister in two governments, including as Minister of Tourism in the present government.
The new medal, the minting of which was authorized by the Ministerial Committee on Symbols and Ceremonies, portrays Ze'evi, known as Gandhi, on the background of an Israeli flag, the IDF and Palmach symbols, and a broken army bracelet with his personal IDF number. A biblical verse often quoted by Gandhi in his speeches also appears: "May G-d grant strength to His nation, may G-d bless His nation with peace."
A stamp in memory of Gandhi will be issued on Sunday, and an official memorial ceremony will be held at Mt. Herzl. On Tuesday morning, Women In Green will plant trees in his memory at the new Jewish neighborhood of Maaleh HaZeitim (Ras El Amud), just a few hundred meters east of the Temple Mount and Western Wall. A guided tour of the area will be conducted afterwards, beginning with a visit at the Mt. of Olives overlook that was recently dedicated to Gandhi's memory.
