At least 29 Hindu worshippers, including four children, were shot dead last night when two assailants opened fire inside a packed temple in the city of Gandhinagar within the Indian state of Gujarat. Indian government officials believe that the attack was carried out by a Pakistani Muslim terror organization. The plain-clothes gunmen hopped a security fence and entered the temple compound firing at random with automatic weapons. Officials estimate that there were 600 worshippers inside the temple when the shooting began. Elite commandos from India’s National Security Guard arrived on the scene and after a lengthy gunbattle, succeeded in killing the attackers early this morning. Gujarat security officials had been on heightened alert fearing an attack by Islamic terror groups. In February, Muslims in Gujarat set fire to a train carrying Hindu activists killing fifty-nine.
Just several hours after the Gandhinagar assailants were neutralized, two gunmen entered the offices of a Christian welfare organization in the Pakistani port city of Karachi and opened fire in all directions. Six people were killed and four others were wounded in that incident. The assailants succeeded in escaping. Officials point their fingers Muslim terrorists for carrying out the shooting. Today’s incident was the latest in a series of attacks on Christian and Western targets since Pakistani President Gen. Pervez Musharraf aligned his government with the United States global war on terror.
