National Religious Party head Effie Eitam is currently considering a proposal to head a united front of parties that would run together in the next national elections. The proposal was formulated over the last few days by several leading Religious Zionist rabbis and two Knesset Members. One of the latter, MK Tzvi Hendel (National Union), told Arutz-7 today that the goal is to ensure that voters who wish to vote for a right-wing party in fact do so. "We don't want to find when we try to pass legislation in the Knesset on important matters, such as courts or establishing a commission of inquiry regarding the Oslo process, that suddenly the [Likud] isn't with us," Hendel said.
Hendel and fellow party MK Uri Ariel recently met with Rabbis Dov Lior, Zalman Melamed, and Chaim Shteiner, at which time the proposal was agreed upon. "We want to make as broad of a right-wing coalition as we can," Hendel said, "including the NRP, Yisrael Beiteinu, National Union, Moledet, and maybe even Yisrael B'Aliyah [headed by Natan Sharansky], if possible."
According to the proposal on the table, the leader of the joint list would be either Eitam or Avigdor Lieberman of Yisrael Beiteinu, by their mutual agreement, with the other one taking the #2 spot. The NRP currently has five Knesset seats, Yisrael Beiteinu - 4, National Union - 2, and Moledet - 1 (Benny Elon). "The Likud receives right-wing votes," Hendel said, "but [sometimes] acts like the left - including today. Sharon speaks very nicely, and says that Oslo is dead, but it really is alive…"
