Possibly due to the military closures enforced throughout PLO-controlled areas yesterday, the war front was relatively calm over the solemn Yom Kippur holiday. The several isolated incidents of Arab violence included rocks hurled at worshippers heading home from prayer services in Jerusalem’s Gilo neighborhood; one youth sustained light wounds, while the assailants fled to a nearby Arab village. Other Arabs threw rocks at Israelis making their way towards the Western Wall near the Damascus Gate entrance to the Old City. No one was hurt.

In Gaza last night IDF forces arrested 23 Arab terrorist suspects, including five with Hamas ties, in Khan Yunis in southern Gaza. Soldiers also located and destroyed nine rocket-producing workshops in the Khan Yunis area, and demolished the home of a Hamas terrorist who ambushed and murdered two soldiers - Arik Arafi and Suleiman Al-Hil - near Ganei Tal in January 1993. The murderer is still at large. Also last night, troops shot and killed an Arab who threw a grenade at their position at the Gush Katif junction.

Two non-injurious shooting attacks in the Binyamin region, north of Jerusalem, today: A car was shot at on its way to Beit El; soldiers entered the area from which the shots were fired, and the road was closed for a short while. Earlier, Arab gunmen fired at an IDF vehicle near the Bir Zeit bridge overpass, north of Ramallah and Beit El. No one was hurt and no damage was caused, but the attackers fled. Two weeks ago, a N'vei Tzuf resident was shot and wounded at that overpass; the same victim was also shot and hurt 200 meters away 14 months ago.

A bomb went off at an Arab school south of Hevron this morning, and another explosive was later found and successfully neutralized by IDF sappers. A 9-year-old pupil was lightly hurt, as were two others less seriously. Police are investigating. A bomb also went off alongside an IDF convoy south of Tul Karem, and Arabs fired at an IDF force west of Jenin; no one was hurt.
