Foreign Minister Shimon Peres will be meeting with U.S. Secretary State Colin Powell in New York today to discuss the river crisis in southern Lebanon. Other members of the Madrid Quartet – representing Russia, the EU, and the UN - will be present at the meeting. Israel is demanding that Lebanon discontinue a project to divert up to a third of the Hatzbani River waters for their own use. Water from the Hatzbani eventually flows into Israel’s Lake of Galilee, which is Israel’s main source of drinking water. A delegation of American water experts arrived in Lebanon yesterday, to inspect the project, which is moving at a furious pace. Israel has threatened a military response should a diversion of water take place. During their talks the leaders are also expected to discuss Oslo War-related issues
