The Jerusalem District Court sentenced a would-be suicide terrorist to 22 years in prison this morning. He was convicted of attempting to detonate himself, together with the Jewish patrons of the Caffit cafe in Jerusalem, six months ago. He pressed the detonator switch as he walked into the cafe, which held some 50 patrons at the time, but it did not go off. He tried more than once to detonate the bomb, but did not succeed before the security guard overpowered him. The judges wrote in their ruling today, "The accused took advantage of his residency in Jerusalem and of his Israeli ID card to travel freely and bring terrorism to [Israelis]."
Four eastern Jerusalem Arabs, members of the recently-apprehended Hamas Jerusalem cell - were indicted today on charges of carrying out eight terrorist attacks, murdering 35 people, and wounding close to 200. The attacks included the Hebrew University bombing, the Moment Cafe and Rishon LeTzion billiards club suicide attacks, and the first attempted Pi Gelilot mega-attack.
