A would-be suicide terrorist was sentenced to 22 years in prison this morning by the Jerusalem District Court. He was convicted of attempting to detonate himself, together with the Jewish patrons of the Caffit cafe in Jerusalem, six months ago. He pressed the detonator switch as he walked into the cafe, which held some 50 patrons at the time, but it did not go off. He tried more than once, but did not succeed before the security guard overpowered him. The judges wrote in their ruling, "The accused took advantage of his residency in Jerusalem and of his Israeli ID card to travel freely around and bring terrorism to the residents.
Four eastern Jerusalem Arabs - members of the Hamas Jerusalem cell - were indicted today on charges of carrying out 8 terrorist attacks, murdering 35 people, and wounding close to 200. The attacks included the Hebrew University bombing, the Moment Cafe and Rishon LeTzion billiards club suicide attacks, and the first attempted Pi Gelilot mega-attack.
