Israel joins nations around the world today in commemorating the one-year anniversary of the terror attacks on America. Prime Minister Ariel Sharon will lead the state's official ceremony at his office, beginning at 3:46PM - corresponding to 8:46AM New York time - the moment the first hijacked plane slammed into the north tower of the World Trade Center. US Ambassador to Israel Dan Kurtzner will be on hand to light memorial candles.

Yesterday, Sharon shared his thoughts about last year's suicide attacks during the weekly cabinet meeting. He said "Thousands of civilians from many countries lost their lives in the attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. They were

perpetrated by terrorists who had lived in the US and who used the freedoms that this great democracy affords its citizens in order to attack it. It was an historic warning light to democracies, which are being called on to defend themselves against those who would assail them. Our hearts are with the innocent victims families and with the American people. I hold US President George Bush in the highest esteem for the true leadership that he showed in understanding the great

historic challenge facing him. Israel, which has been engaged in a war against murderous terror since its independence to this very day, knows that there is no compromise in the war against terror. Any display of weakness in the battle against

terror is destined to claim a heavy price."

While the US has issued a worldwide terror warning, fearing attacks on American targets, Israeli security officials say that there are no specific terror warnings in the country today. However, the army and police are beefing up their presence near large buildings, shopping centers, and other public places.
