Top White House officials took several opportunities over the weekend to justify a US strike on Iraq. US National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice told “CNN Sunday Morning” that Iraq "has a history of lying about everything. This is not a regime that can be trusted. The fact that they attacked Israel during the Gulf War should tell us something. This is a regime that wants to blackmail us [the US] because our interests clash [and] eventually it will want to blackmail the entire international community. If we wait until that blackmail includes the ability to blackmail with nuclear weapons, we will have made a grave mistake.”

US Vice President Dick Cheney told NBC’s “Meet The Press” that the cost of military action against Iraq now "would be significantly less than having to deal with being hit with another attack similar in magnitude to September 11." Secretary of State Powell also called for a regime change in Iraq.

Despite the tough talk, Spain joined the ranks today of those who oppose an attack on Iraq, and Canada is considering doing the same.
